Understanding Movement Disorders
Movement disorders encompass a spectrum of conditions that affect how a person moves. These conditions can manifest as either an increase in movements (hyperkinetic) or a reduction in voluntary and involuntary movements (hypokinetic).
Movement disorders or motor tics in children can result from various factors, including pathological changes in the basal ganglia, hereditary factors and environmental influences. They can have a significant impact on a child’s quality of life, and early diagnosis and intervention are crucial.
At Kids Neuro Clinic, we specialize in diagnosing and treating movement disorders in children. If you suspect your child may be experiencing motor tics, Tourette Syndrome, or other movement-related issues, read on to learn more.
Types of Movement Disorders
Hyperkinetic Movement Disorders:
- Ataxia: Causes uncoordinated or clumsy balance, speech or limb movements.
- Chorea and Huntington’s Disease: Characterized by repetitive, brief, irregular, involuntary movements involving the face, mouth, trunk, and limbs.
- Dystonia: Involves sustained involuntary muscle contractions with twisting, repetitive movements.
- Myoclonus: Leads to lightning-quick jerks of a muscle or a group of muscles.
- Restless Legs Syndrome: Results in unpleasant, abnormal feelings in the legs while relaxing or lying down, often relieved by movement.
- Tourette Syndrome: Presents with repetitive movements (motor tics) and vocal sounds (vocal tics).
- Tremor: Involves involuntary rhythmic shaking of parts of the body.
Hypokinetic Movement Disorders:
- Cervical Dystonia: Causes long-lasting contractions or intermittent contractions of the neck muscles, leading to the neck turning in different ways.
- Multiple System Atrophy.
- Parkinson’s Disease.
- Parkinsonism.
Functional Movement Disorder:
- Resembles other movement disorders but is not due to neurological disease.

Diagnosis at Kids Neuro Clinic
Our diagnostic process starts with a comprehensive medical history, addressing your child’s symptoms, triggers, duration, frequency and family history. We assess vital signs, and conduct a thorough physical examination focusing on movement disturbances, balance, muscle stiffness and speech.
Additional tests, such as laboratory tests, Electromyography (EMG), Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS), and brain imaging, may be recommended to rule out symptomatic causes.
